Time Management Tips on IELTS writing exam

Identify the main topic of the Tasks
Identifying the main topic is tricky but there is an advantage. If you can identify the main topic of the sections, you are more likely to write the answers easily as you will be able to incorporate the main points of the task.
Read The Questions First
A lot of people start writing the task right away; however, this is actually the wrong thing to do. You should always go to the questions first. Read the first question, underline keywords that will help you find the answer in the text, and only then start with the Tasks.
Allocate your time wisely
You must divide your time equally. In the actual test, you have 60 minutes to do two tasks and, unlike the other tests, you don’t have any time to waste. So spend only 20 minutes on Task 1 and 40 minutes on Task 2.
Use standard written phrases
Often candidates struggle to finish their writing in time. This happens when they try to write every sentence from scratch. The fact is, in conventional writing, some standard expressions and phrases and add on to them the specific information we wish to communicate. Learning and using these will help save time.
Time your Writing
Managing time is one of the most important skills for IELTS test-takers, so start writing the main points to be covered in task 2 first, and then give yourself 3–5 minutes to write down some of the keywords and the main idea, before writing & summarizing what you write.

Don’t overthink an answer
Overthinking an answer can lead to time wastage as well as distract you from concentrating on the next task. Form a clear and strong roadmap for your writing and stick to the question asked.

Most candidates often zone out or get lost in thinking and lose their train of thought along with the time and marks. Time is of the essence and any lost time can not be recovered.
